How to Remove Skunk Odors from Your Home

So you or your dog got sprayed by a skunk and now your home smells horrible. Maybe a skunk sprayed an animal outside of your home and it lingered in through a window, either way, we can help! Removing skunk odors is daunting and can take some work but it is not impossible. Here are our tips on what you should do to quickly tackle and remove skunk odors in your home.

Why do Skunks Smell?

Skunks have a gland under their tail that they use to spray thiols. Skunks use this smelly oily substance as a defense mechanism and pack a punch that can last 2 to 3 weeks. This smelly liquid from the skunk can get into hair, skin, clothes, furniture, carpet, and other porous materials. Skunks can even release small doses of thiols without being startled or scared which still can have a smelly impact on your home.

What to Do if Your Home gets Skunked

If your home gets skunked because of a direct or indirect spray you should immediately remove the source of the odor and open windows and doors to air it out. Creating air flow to help evacuate the smell can help a great deal as you tackle the tough part of cleaning. If it is a pet you can immediately wash the furry pet to help remove the thiols. Use a dedicated skunk shampoo or other remedy to clean your pet thoroughly. If you were unfortunately sprayed it is best to remove your clothing and discard it into a trash bag and place it outside. Once you have deodorized yourself or your pet you can tackle the rest of your home. If you have furniture, window coverings, or other items that were contaminated you will want to remove those from your home as well. 

Clean the affected areas of your home with an odor-neutralizing solution. This type of solution tackles the odor by cleaning and deodorizing the skunk oils directly. We recommend using the warmest water you can in your deodorizing solution to help soften up the oils in the skunk juice to help release it from any material. This may take a few rounds of cleaning and we recommend using microfiber rags as they are efficient, inexpensive, and can be thrown away. There will be no saving the towels or rags once they are funky so don’t use your favorite bath towels. 

For an added boost of power, the Bio Bomb Minis in a steamer or carpet cleaner really can knock out the skunk odors quickly and will make the whole process easier. Extracting the foul liquid and moisture from carpets, rugs, furniture, or drapes will allow things to dry faster as well.

Once you have deep cleaned all of the contaminated areas in your home you need to clear the air! Replacing the filter in your HVAC system is a good thing to do regularly as it is good for your indoor air quality and your furnace. When your home has been sprayed or infected by skunk funk you will want to replace this filter as well as it can hold odors and will make it difficult to remove the skunk odors permanently. Much like the cabin air filter in your car, the home air filter is easy to change and inexpensive so it is an easy step in the skunk odor removal process.
